thedisneyhipster:

This afternoon, I attended a screening of The Bully Project, a documentary that follows a few families and children over the course of a year who have all felt the lash of bullies. Two families are included who have lost children to suicide because of it.

I cried a lot of course. Not only is this film incredibly sad, as well as infuriating, but it’s close to home. It’s not something I talk about or generally tell people, but I was bullied enough my freshmen year of high school (leading into sophomore year where I more or less just felt silently miserable) that I switched schools for my junior and senior years. Don’t get me wrong, I am so glad I switched schools, but there are so many people out there who don’t have that option, and then those who it was too late for.

I felt so much for the young boy who said he “didn’t feel anything anymore” when his mother asked if he is upset with how he is treated. Isn’t that worse than getting angry? Than crying? That’s when things get dangerous. That’s when you can lose people. And I know exactly what he means when he says he just felt empty inside.

Bullying comes in all sorts of varieties. Too many schools have the attitude that if someone isn’t bleeding than nothing is wrong. J.K Rowling has put it best- “Thoughts could leave deeper scarring than almost anything else.”

I am lucky that I have always had a loving family I feel I can talk to and that I had an outside friend from my school that I felt was all I really needed. I never considered self harm or taking my own life but if I had not had these crucial factors, who knows.

To me, bullying is one of the most crucial problems in our country today. I hope one day to be one of those people that can help make the suffering stop.
